World Heritage Cities (WHCs) are the cities that are (in part) inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. WHCs witnessed critical historic moments and passed on cultural traditions of communities in urban contexts, with rich evidence of artefacts, monuments, groups of buildings and sites. As agreed by all 196 world nations that ratified the 1972 World Heritage Convention, the cultural and natural heritage of Outstanding Universal Value is crucial to be conserved for mankind as a whole. The 2011 UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape recognizes urban heritage as a social, cultural and economic asset for the development of cities. Treating cities as dynamic organisms and urban heritage management as a holistic approach, it is important to document and map the knowledge from a broader public to facilitate more inclusive heritage decision-making processes. However, effectively sensing, documenting, and managing urban heritage in the 21st century presents unprecedented opportunities and challenges with the ever-growing volumes of data in all sources and the advancing digital technologies to analyze them. The integration of multi-source data, including but not limited to remote sensing, geographic information systems, street view imagery, crowdsourced information, historical archives, photogrammetry, and user-generated content from social media, offers transformative potential for heritage studies and urban science. This integration allows for more comprehensive and scalable assessment of cultural significance, supporting evidence-based heritage management practices.
This special issue seeks to present scholarly advances and initiate dialogues in research and practice, showcasing how multi-source data can be used to better understand WHCs from broad perspectives, safeguarding their heritage values and attributes in balance with sustainable urban developments.
We invite submissions of manuscripts that cover a wide range of topics related to multi-source data being integrated for sensing World Heritage Cities. We welcome diverse manuscript types, including literature review, theoretical, methodological, and empirical work. Topics may include, but are not limited, to:
