Introduction
This course provides advanced lectures on the history of Chinese architecture from ancient times to the first half of the 20th century. Through three thematic sections—vernacular architecture in pre-modern China, high-style architecture in pre-modern China, and architecture in early-modern China—the course presents the diversity of Chinese architecture through history and its multiplicity in historical narratives. It encourages students to reapproach the characters of Chinese architecture in the multiple scopes of buildings, settlements and landscapes, thinking about how the historic built environment has been interacting with the human body, the technics and the social environment. It also invites students to explore different methods of interpreting historical materials such as physical objects, literature and images. The course’s final project requires students to address their independent opinion on the selected topic based on primary sources and represent through digital measurements.
本课程为中国建筑史专题英语讲座系列，通过民间风土建筑、官式古典建筑和近现代建筑三个板块，呈现中国建筑的多元性和中国建筑历史叙事的多重性。课程将在建筑、聚落、景观等多尺度对象中呈现中国建筑的基本特征，讨论历史上的建成环境如何与文化、技术和社会环境进行互动，并了解实物、文献、图像等不同历史素材的释读方法。课程作业要求学生基于一手材料形成关于历史事实的独立见解，并通过数字技术进行展示和互动。
