In the heart of Beijing, a historic central axis runs through the ancient city, passing iconic landmarks such as Yongding Gate, the Forbidden City, and the Bell and Drum Towers. This magnificent urban spatial axis embodies the traditional etiquette of China’s capital from its imperial era, bearing witness to many glorious moments in Chinese history. Often referred to as the “backbone of the city,” this historic line achieved a momentous milestone this summer when it was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2024. This exciting recognition has transformed the axis into a vibrant bridge, connecting the world to the rich tapestry of Chinese traditional culture.
This July，Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese Capital was successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in India.

9月20日晚，清华大学国家遗产中心邀请国际知名的世界遗产专家、建筑师和城市规划师、2024北京文化论坛嘉宾贾德·塔贝特（Jad Tabet），在前门PAGEONE北京坊“中轴线文化空间”进行”北京中轴线：全球视角下的文化桥梁”这一主题演讲，并和北京中轴线申遗文本总负责人、清华大学建筑学院吕舟教授对谈，共同探讨北京中轴线如何成为全球文化对话的纽带。两位重量级专家将从全球视角出发，回顾中轴线的悠久历史，审视其在现代社会中的地位，并展望它在未来世界文化遗产中的作用。
On the evening of September 20, the Tsinghua University National Heritage Center is honored to invite Jad Tabet, an internationally renowned World Heritage expert, architect, urban planner, and guest of the 2024 Beijing Culture Forum, to deliver a themed lecture titled “The Beijing Central Axis: A Cultural Bridge in Global Perspective” at the “Central Axis Cultural Space” in Qianmen PAGEONE Beijing Fun. He will also engage in a dialogue with Professor Lü Zhou from the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, the chief expert for the Beijing Central Axis World Heritage nomination dossier. Together, they will explore how the Beijing Central Axis can serve as a link for global cultural dialogue. These two experts will adopt a global perspective to review the central axis’s long history, examine its position in modern society, and envision its role in future world cultural heritage.
此次演讲不仅是对北京中轴线这一世界级文化遗产的解读，更是一次深入的文化交流。我们将一起探讨如何通过中轴线这一独特的文化符号，加深全球对中国传统文化的理解，同时，也探讨它如何成为连接不同文明、沟通过去与未来的桥梁。
This lecture goes beyond interpreting the Beijing Central Axis as a world heritage site. It offers a platform for cultural exchange, exploring how this unique symbol fosters global understanding and connects diverse civilizations across time.

贾德 · 塔贝特
Jad Tabet
Jad Tabet is an internationally renowned architect and urban planner with significant influence in the field of world heritage conservation. He has served as the Honorary President of ICOMOS Lebanon, a member of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, and a member of UNESCO’s High-Level Reflection Group for Strategic Transformation. Mr. Tabet has extensive practical experience in areas such as historic urban landscapes, public space design, and the restoration and revitalization of traditional urban fabrics. He is also a senior consultant for the preparation of World Heritage nomination files and management plans, making important contributions to capacity building in heritage conservation and management.
吕舟
Lü Zhou
Professor Lü Zhou is a distinguished academic at Tsinghua University’s School of Architecture and serves as the Director of the National Heritage Center. He played a pivotal role as the chief expert overseeing the preparation of the Beijing Central Axis World Heritage nomination dossier. Professor Lü holds several prestigious positions in the field of architectural heritage and cultural preservation, including Chairman of the Architectural History Branch of the Architectural Society of China, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics, and Chairman of the Historical and Cultural Protection and Inheritance Professional Committee under the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. His extensive expertise and leadership in these roles underscore his significant contributions to the preservation and study of China’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Shang Jin
尚晋是多年从事文化遗产保护利用等方面研究和交流的学者，获得清华大学建筑历史与理论硕士学位。曾主持第44届世界遗产大会第四届遗产地管理者论坛开幕式、“世界遗产引领作用”的回响—从福州到喀山主题边会等重要国际活动。
Shang Jin is a scholar who has been engaged in research and exchange in cultural heritage conservation and utilization for many years. He holds a Master’s degree in Architecture History and Theory from Tsinghua University. His involvement includes participating in the analysis of the third round of periodic reporting for the Asia-Pacific World Heritage region, the impact assessment of the Macao Historic Centre World Heritage site, and writing observation reports for the 44th and 45th World Heritage Committee sessions. At the 44th World Heritage Committee session, he presided over important international events such as the opening ceremony of the 4th Forum for Site Managers and the thematic side event “Echoes of World Heritage Leadership – From Fuzhou to Kazan”.
